Advent Activities – Read a Christmas Story
By today, we had already settled into our morning routine – first they open the Milka calendar, and then we move on to the activity calendar. They take turns, so fights are avoided, and for the third day we discovered that our task was to read a Christmas story – exciting for all three of us.
Our Usual Bedtime Reading Routine
Just to explain our usual reading situation: by now, they each choose their own book and read alone in their rooms before falling asleep. It can be one they pick weekly from the library or something from our own collection. So I was really happy to see how excited they were about reading a bedtime story together.
Choosing a Christmas Book in French
We went to El Corte Inglés at midday, where they had a lovely Christmas book display, but the girls said they preferred to read in French. I tried to suggest a few versions we already had at home, but Olivia said no – she wanted to choose.
Knowing their current book tastes, her choice really surprised me. She came back with two options: one Peppa Pig Christmas story (their favourite when they were much smaller) and one Paw Patrol Christmas book (Olivia’s favourite, and I think Zoe’s too, although she never admits it).
Rediscovering Peppa Pig at Christmas
What was even more surprising was that Zoe agreed as well. She said it would be nice to read something with pictures for a change. They were delighted to hear Peppa’s story – it felt like rediscovering an old friend you haven’t seen in years. Just a side note: I recently discovered that Peppa has a baby sister, Evie, who was born in 2025.
Reading Aloud Together: A Heartwarming Moment
As you can imagine, we finished that book in no time, so we moved on to Paw Patrol. This time, the girls decided to read aloud – Zoe did most of the reading, while Olivia jumped in from time to time. There is such comfort in those stories: simple, funny, kind characters that feel relaxing and heart-warming. And I was so happy to see that, despite their pre-teen years, they are still my little babies in so many ways.
A Perfect Advent Evening
We spent such a lovely evening that I’m now seriously considering buying a new Peppa book for Olivia. I don't know about them , but I’m quite curious to see how the family is doing now with three baby pigs.
